    Welcome to the course ITE4330 Entrepreneurship project (6 ECP)!

    General course description 

    The aim of the course is to give thorough overview and knowledge of starting a company following Startup principles. 

    Participants have the chance to experience the process of modelling services and products in interdisciplinary and multi-cultural teams by having practical hands-on sessions.

    e-Governance Technologies and Services (IVGM) and Health Care Technologies (YVEM) master programme students will be given a thorough overview and know-how to start a company that is based on Startup principles. Lectures will provide a theoretical basis for development of a business idea/model, and workshop sessions enable practical output for students to act in a multinational teams creating a business. 


    The lectures of ideation, team building, service design/design thinking, business models and strategies, project management, financing mechanisms, marketing, cyber security threats and intellectual property issues will provide knowledge for successful development of new e-services or products.

    Practical sessions on aspects of start-up life (with guest speakers), design thinking and prototyping, paid digital marketing, corporate finance and risks.

    Course will also include feedback sessions on various stages of the course in order to check on how the teams are coping with the course and whether they need any help to progress more efficiently.

    In cooperation with the course, MEKTORY innovation center will be running its start-up programme STARTERtech. Participants must register at starteridea.ee until March 1, 2019.

    Learning outcomes

    By the end of the course students are ready to join the Start-up Community to develop new services/products.

    The participant:

    • understands the concept of Start-ups and is able to implement its principles into entrepreneurial activities;
    • as a team member is able to work under time-, information- and peer pressure constraints in an international and multicultural team with diverse experiences from different domains; 
    • creates a marketing research plan, defines marketing activities and conducts a market research using various tools in digital and traditional marketing. Also capable of building a thought-through advertising strategy using relevant channels; 
    • defines and analyses the business idea of the e-service/product by using Business Model Canvas and SWOT table;
    • understands key financial documents (Profit & loss statement, Cash Flow statement, etc.) and capable of doing financial projections for the chosen business model;
    • refines the business idea up to a level of a visualised prototype and pitches it to potential investors.


    Evaluation and assessment criteria

    The final evaluation is based on “pass” or “fail” principle. 

    As the focus of the course is on team-projects and team-work, participant have to follow all the assignments given for the team to pass the course. Team consists of 3-5 people which compliment with their skills to the final outcome of the team-work. Teams must include only the students who are taking this course in OIS. TTÜ Mektory STARTERtech participants cannot be included into teams.

    To pass the course and get "pass" mark, student needs to get a minimum of 51 points. All of the assignments are mandatory. 

    Points structure: 

    • Participation (attendance will be recorded during the lectures) - 10
    • Presentation and one-pager - 40
    • Assignments - 50 (group work, home work, other assignments supporting the start up project)

    Assignments have all the information you need to successfully go through the course and end up with a prototype of a startup-project. Every tasks are designed to imitate the tasks you need to go through in real life to build a strong fundament for your project.

    Note: for the completion of Mektory programme you must register at starteridea.ee by March 1, 2019 and submit your one-pager and presentation before TTÜ Mektory Startup Competition (deadline TBA)

  • Course materials

    During this course, the teams of the Entrepreneurship project will be project managing their activities through Trello. To get access to the environment, please contact the course convenor, Regina Sirendi.

    During the second session Marili Ruus (COO of Elevator Startups) gave you insights and techniques for dealing with different problems that people face. E.g. a problem statement section was discussed.

    The second section discussed was customer validation.

    All students were assigned into groups and were invited to Trello. 

    For the next time, you will need to formalise the results and outcomes of the second session.

      Please prepare for the next session 3 personas per team that would benefit from your product or get relief for the problem that your team has.

                For the final homework I ask all teams to submit a report of your activities throughout the course.

                Prepare the final report. 

                Include all the learnings in your final import for a comprehensive overview.

                Mandatory parts of the final report:

                • Brief description of the identified problem and solution - what stands in the core offered business idea. Should be presented via lean (or business model) canvas with each component explained in text.
                • Introduction of the team and explanation how each member contributes to the development of the idea with relevant knowledge and skills;
                • Customer Persona - explanation of the target market by the means of creating the sample customer with background information;
                • UI&UX Storyboard, User journey: paper based or clickable prototype of the solution;
                • Go-to-market strategy - marketing strategy which includes planned paid and organic activity in order to boost awareness, consideration, purchase intent, and eventually, sales.
                • Competitors, SWOT and Risk analyses.
                • Financial calculations - how business is planning to make and spend money, how many employees are needed, are there any tax exemptions, etc.
                • Funding strategy - how many funds will needed on each stage of company development
                • Text for 3-minute pitch and investor one page.
